The purpose of this study was to predict mandibular anterior crowding changes
between mixed and early permanent dentition.
For this study, dental casts were taken from 61 children (male 28, female 33)
longitudinally, age from 6 to 13 year who have an Angle's class ¥° relationship.
Preeruptive tooth inclination to the occlusal plane were measured through matched
lateral mandibular view film with cast. The subject divided to three stages; stage ¥°
-eruption of mandibular central incisors and first permanent molars, stage ¥± - eruption
of mandibular later incisors, stage ¥² - eruption of mandibular canines, first and second
premolars.
In order to predict anterior crowding changes, correlations and multiple regression
analysis was taken in preeuptive tooth inclination and parameters of dental casts. The
results were as follows.
1. Intercanine width of lower arch increased between stage ¥° and stage ¥± (P<0.05),
and interpolar width (6-6) and 1-C length in lower arch increased (P<0.05) between
stage ¥± and stage ¥², and reverse in 1-6 lower a.ch length (P<0.05).
2. Statistically significant sex difference was found in intercanine width of lower arch
(stage ¥°), preeruptive lower first premolar angle to acclusal plane (Stage ¥±), and 1-6
length (Stage ¥²). They were larger in male (P<0.05).
3. Crowding changes (Stage ¥° to ¥²) appeared to be highly correlated with arch
perimeter (r= 0.78, p <0.01).
4. The regression equation for predicting mandibular anterior crowding changes
between stage ¥° and Stage ¥² was as follows.
Y= -0.39X1-0.07X2+17.5
multiple R = 0.922
sig. F=0.0013
Y; mandibular anterior crowding changes between Stage ¥° and ¥²
X1 ; mandibular arch perimeter from distal surface of lower right
primary lateral incisor to mesial surface of lower right first permanent molar
(Stage ¥°).
X2 ; radiographic lower second molar angle (Stage ¥°).
